First Game of the New Year
Shallow Lake visited Atom LL at home in Southampton for the first game of the New Year. The first period of our first game of 2014 was one of our best this season.

A shake-up on positioning moved regular defenceman Jack Bennett to left wing and Tehya Johnston joined Paydon Ritchie on defence. The move showed early promise when Jack was lined up with a powerful shot on net only 30 seconds into the first. An exciting way to begin the game! Throughout the entire game Jack hustled to rush the net and raced back to defend the net against Lakers attackers. Shallow Lake’s first goal was scored despite strong pressure from Camden Ritchie. Kaden “Krackle” Vance was kept busy keeping the puck out of the net for the rest of the period with several super saves. Quinn Fowler managed a breakaway, deeked the goalie and put it in the Shallow Lake net in the first period. The Storm fans cheered and Braydyn Roote rushed over to celebrate and accidentally knocked Quinn to the ice. Oops! Moving into the 2nd period the score was 1 – 1. Storm forwards Aiden deVries, Ethan Walsh, Jack Bennett could not catch a break and defencemen Paydon Ritchie and Tehya Johnson skated their hearts out. Unfortunately the Lakers goalie shut down all shots on his net in the second period. Liam Kelly, Quinn Fowler and Braden Kahgee made a strong offensive line, along with defencemen Braydyn Roote and Camden Ritchie, they kept fighting for control of the puck. After the Lakers’ second goal they were on a roll and didn’t let up. Hard work did pay off for Saugeen Shores with the Storm’s goal in the third period. Assisted by Liam Kelly, Fowler put the puck in the net for the second time with 3:42 left in the game. Shallow Lake’s offense got the best of the Storm players in the 2nd and 3rd period and “Krackle” had many great saves but Shallow Lake shooters got a few goals by him. The storm had a power play in the last minute and played hard till the end. Coaches Garrett Pucan and Chris Walsh get a shout-out for encouraging the players and focusing on improvements for the upcoming game. GM Kevin Kelly was on the bench this afternoon, supporting the team. Submitted by Jen Fowler
