BDO Dunwoody Midget Storm Update
On Sunday, October 20th the BDO Dunwoody Midget Storm hosted Wingham at the Plex in which the home team came away with a 5-0 win.  About three minutes into the game, Jordan Vanhaelemeesch opened the scoring for the Storm, with James Besito assisting.  Then in the first five minutes of the second period, Saugeen Shores potted two more goals to build a 3-0 lead with Steve Langendoen scoring first, assisted by Charlie Wilkinson and then Harrison Alvarez getting the next goal, with Matt Schields getting the assist.  About three minutes into the third, Besito scored to make it 4-0, assisted by Vanhaelemeesch.  The final goal came on the power play, with Langendoen scoring, assisted by Josh Caley and Wilkinson.

The following night, Monday October 21st, the Storm had Listowel up for a visit at the Southampton Coliseum.  The game started off with the home team killing off a number of penalties for most of the first frame, yet they were able to keep the score at 0-0 after one period by pressuring Listowel and not letting them set up in the home team’s end. The second period was a different matter as it became a scoring-fest, with the puck crossing the goal line seven times over a stretch of a little over six minutes in the middle part of the frame.  Listowel scored first a little over six minutes into the period, and then made it 2-0 about a minute later. With the two quick goals it wasn’t looking good for the Storm, but then the Storm’s Matt Teschke scored a minute after Listowel’s second goal to close the gap to 2-1.  Assists came from Alvarez and Wilkinson.  Considering there were 7 goals scored in six minutes you can see where this is going.  About a minute after Teschke’s goal the Cyclones went up 3-1 but then ran into some penalty trouble.  Then, about forty seconds after falling behind 3-1 and now with the man advantage, Ryan Hopcraft positioned himself in front of the net and scored 5 seconds into the power play, assisted by Schields.  Listowel was back in the box about 15 seconds later and the Storm again quickly set up in the Cyclone’s end with Steve Langendoen setting up behind the goal and feeding the puck to Josh Caley who had slipped in from the point to fire the puck into the net to tie the game up at 3-3.  Vanhaelemeesch also got an assist on the goal.  The Storm got the final goal of the second with about two and a half minutes left when Steven Pilar made a pass attempt to the front of the net from out of the Cyclone’s corner.  The Listowel goalie or one of their defence tried to block the pass-out with their stick but it ended up going through the five hole and into the goal, giving the Storm a 4-3 lead.  Wilkinson and Wyatt Lablance were credited with the assists. The third period ended up being scoreless as the BDO Dunwoody Midgets held off Listowel for the 4-3 win.

On Saturday, October 26th the BDO Dunwoody Midgets participated in the Archie McMillan Memorial Midget Rep Tournament in Kincardine.  It started off with a match against the Petrolia Oilers and both teams played a scoreless first period.  Early in the second the Storm opened the scoring on the power play with Caley scoring from the slot, set up by Schields.  The Storm held the 1-0 lead until about two minutes into the final frame when the Oilers scored to tie the game up at 1-1.  About two minutes later, Vanhaelemeesch scored to restore the one goal lead for the Storm.  The lead didn’t stand for long though, as several minutes later the Oilers took advantage of the power play and scored to make it 2-2.  Then with less than three minutes left in the game Petrolia was again playing with the man-advantage and were able to use it to score to take the lead for the first time in the game.  In the remaining minutes of the game the Storm received yet another penalty.  Saugeen lifted the goalie in an attempt to tie the game up but any hope was lost when the Oilers were able to dump the puck into the net for a 4-2 finish.

Game two was played against East Lambton Eagles and again the Storm played through the first period to a 0-0 draw.  The Storm opened the scoring at the 7:29 mark of the second period when Vanhaelemeesch skated hard down the left side and beat the goalie with a wicked snap shot over the keeper’s shoulder.  Schields was credited with an assist on the goal.  The Storm dominated the game in the final frame with the help of some man-advantages but couldn’t beat the East Lambton goaltender. With six minutes left in the game it was the Eagles who scored to tie the game up at 1-1 which stood up for the rest of the match. Game three was an elimination game played against the tournament host team, the Kincardine Kinucks, who opened the scoring early in the game to take the 1-0 which held until the 2:20 mark of the second period when the Storm’s Vanhaelemeesch scored on the power play.  Langendoen teed up the puck for Vanhaelemeesch on the tying goal.  The game was anybody’s for the taking, and it was Kincardine who got the winning 2-1 goal in the third to put the Storm out of the tournament. The whole team competed well and credit should be given to goaltenders Bryce Ribey and Joey Doyle for some excellent saves that kept the games close.  The Storm’s next game is this Wednesday, October 30th on the road against the Listowel Cyclones.
