Atom L.L. #1 Takes On TCDMHA
The Allan’s Fireside Grill/TD Canada Trust Atom L.L. #1 team took on the TCDMHA Rebels last Wednesday night, Nov. 19th at the Desboro Arena.  The game proved to be a closely contested match between the two teams. The first period saw lots of action at both ends of the rink as each team struggled to maintain control of the play. Shots on goal were kept at a minimum for both teams as the play seesawed back and forth.  It wasn’t until the final minutes of this initial period that the Storm finally managed to make their way on to the scoreboard.  The Storm’s first goal came from the persistent efforts of forward Bill Johnson and the eagle eye of Ben Gundrum.  Johnson took the puck from deep in the defensive zone and skated it up to blue line where his pass up the centre to Gundrum was nearly picked off by a Rebel’s player. Fortunately, Gundrum was able to quickly slap the puck over the defenseman’s stick to the corner.  Johnson rushed in deep to the offensive zone to corral the loose puck and send a sweet pass to the front of the net where Gundrum was waiting to fire one home.  The Rebels answered the challenge a minute and a half later with a goal of their own.  The first period ended with a score of one all.

The second period started off on a strong note for the Storm as they opened up the scoring early.  Jonah Neron rushed the defence at the point, stole the puck and shot off on a breakaway. He ended the breakaway by blasting one past the Rebels netminder on what looked like an impossible angle. This early dominance quickly dissipated as the remainder of the period saw the Storm scrambling to maintain control of the puck.  Both teams kept the play active but once again shots on net were kept to a minimum. The score at the end of the second was 2-1 in favour of Saugeen Shores.

The third period proved to be the one which allowed the Storm to wrap up the win. The play continued as in the first two periods with action moving from end to end.  Finally as the half mark of the period approached Thomas MacDonald caught a flip pass from defenseman Carter Swanson and charged past the Rebel’s defense to slide one past the goalie. Less than one minute later the Rebels fought their way back on to the scoreboard, bringing the score to 3-2.  Once again the play continued to be active but this time the Storm managed to create more scoring opportunities than in the previous periods.  MacDonald made one of those chances count in the final minutes of the game. He took off on a rush and first deked the lone defenseman and then the goalie to rack up his second goal of the night. The final score was 4-2 for the Saugeen Shores team. Cameron Plante maintained his strong presence in net, making key saves when needed to keep his team in the game. Forwards J.D. Barnard, Summer Cameron-Nashkewa, Gundrum, Johnson, Evan Lamont, MacDonald, Owen MacKenzie, and Neron all kept the puck in constant motion during their respective shifts. The defensive foursome of Levi Klie, Cole McArthur, Jake Olinskie and Carter Swanson were kept busy repeatedly trying to clear their zone. The Allan’s Fireside Grill/TD Canada Trust Atom L.L. #1’s next game takes place on Wednesday, Nov. 26th in Southampton against Saugeen Shores L.L. #2.
