The Night The Lights Went Out In Wiarton
The Allan’s Fireside Grill/TD Canada Trust Atom L.L. #1 team was visiting the Wiarton Wild Atom team in Wiarton on Sunday, Dec. 7th when a power outage during the third period ended the game early. The Storm team walked away with a 4-2 victory despite the premature ending.

The first period saw the Wild make the initial strike as Jude McLeod flipped one high past Storm netminder, Cameron Plante. The Storm rallied hard but couldn’t find their way on to the scoreboard until the final minute of the first. This goal came as Thomas MacDonald broke out the defensive zone and rushed down ice, flipping one past the Wiarton goalie. The score was tied at 1-1 going in to the second.

The next period proved to be as fast paced as the previous one. However, it wasn’t until just past the period’s half way mark that Wiarton’s McLeod managed to flip another one past the Storm goalie, Plante. The Storm continued to press and J.D. Barnard made a stellar pass from the corner to the front of the net where MacDonald was waiting to bang home his second goal of the game. Once again the score was all tied up going in to the next period.

The third period saw the Storm stage a comeback as Bill Johnson scored an early goal with a nice solid shot from the hash marks. The Storm maintained their pressure on the Wild team and it paid off as Cole McArthur took a sweet pass from MacDonald and buried one in to the back of the Wild net. Cameron Plante put in another solid performance in goal and it looked like the Storm was on a roll. Unfortunately a town wide power outage ended the game early and the Storm called it a night with the 4-2 win. Kudos to all the players on the ice and the bench who heeded their coach’s instructions in the midst of the confusion and allowed the arena staff to evacuate the ice surface in a safe and orderly manner.

The Allan’s Fireside Grill/TD Canada Trust Atom L.L. #1 team had also travelled to Tara earlier in the week to take on the Arran-Elderslie Ice Dogs. There was no shortage of power either in town or on the ice that night though as both teams battled hard and provided the crowd with a high voltage game. The air was charged with excitement as the teams rushed up and down the ice, each vying for that first goal. However, the scoreboard would remain blank for the first two periods. Cameron Plante absolutely shone in net as he thwarted the attempts of the Ice Dog offense with his outstanding play between the pipes. The Storm struggled to create scoring chances and both teams entered the third period eager for a goal. It would be the Ice Dogs who managed to net that all important first goal in the first half of the third period. The Storm continued to work hard and finally found their way on to the scoreboard with a one-timer by Ben Gundrum. That would end the scoring for the night as both teams kept up the pressure but neither was able to produce any more points. The evening ended with a 1-1 tie game.

The Allan’s Fireside Grill/TD Canada Trust Atom L.L. #1 team will hit the road again this weekend, travelling to Plattsville to take part in the Plattsville Pride Tournament. Good luck Storm!
