Atom L.L. #1 Downs Shallow Lake 10-6
The Allan’s Fireside Grill/TD Canada Trust Atom Local League team skated to victory over the Shallow Lake team in Shallow Lake on Saturday, Nov. 15th. The Storm started the scoring early, racking up three goals in the first four minutes of the game. Bill Johnson, with assists from Cole McArthur and Angeline Kimewon, was the first to launch one past the Lakers netminder. Next up was Evan Lamont, assisted by Thomas MacDonald, firing one in two minutes later.  Then, another minute later, a Ben Gundrum one-timer, nicely set up on a pass from Lamont, was added to the scoreboard. Later in the period, J.D. Barnard continued the attack as he deftly wrapped around the back of the net to rocket one past the Shallow Lake goalie on the short side. Carter Swanson was credited with the assist as he had sent in a sweet pass from the blue line. The Storm dominated the play throughout the first period and it wasn’t until the final minute and a half that the Lakers managed to work their way on to the board. The Storm wasn’t finished yet though as MacDonald, unassisted, tallied another goal for his team just seconds later. The first period ended with the Storm up 5-1 over the Lakers.

The second period proved to be a different story than the previous one with Shallow Lake being the first to strike in the opening minutes, resulting in their second goal of the game. Shortly after that MacDonald managed to slide one by the Lakers goalie after he stole the puck from the defense in the corner.  Shallow Lake fought their way back to score two more goals, bringing their tally to four.  Once again the Storm players decided to end the period on their own terms as Cole McArthur fired a solid shot from the point, through traffic, to net the team’s seventh goal. McArthur was assisted by MacDonald and Levi Klie.

The third period was the weakest for the Storm despite capitalizing on the few scoring opportunities that they produced. This period saw the team struggling to maintain its lead as the forward lines eased up on the forechecking and the defense had a few miscues which opened the door for the Lakers to attempt a comeback. Shallow Lake was up first again to bring their mark to five goals. The Storm quickly answered back as MacDonald broke away, assisted by a leading pass from Johnson and Kimewon, resulting in his third goal in this match-up.  The scoring continued for the Storm as Bill Johnson capitalized on a neat pass from MacDonald to beat the Lakers goalie on the far side, racking up his second goal of the afternoon.  Shallow Lake wasn’t ready to be counted out yet as they scored their sixth and final goal of the game just over one minute later.  Evan Lamont of the Storm got his second goal of the day off a nice pass from McArthur at the point, cleanly beating the Lakers goalie on the short side. The final tally was 10 to 6 for the Allan’s Fireside Grill/TD Canada Trust Atom Local League team.

Overall, the Storm played a relatively organized game which saw all lines working well together. Forwards;  J.D. Barnard, Owen MacKenzie, Jonah Neron, Gundrum, Johnson, Kimewon, Lamont, and MacDonald kept the pressure on the Lakers team by charging down the ice and keeping the play active in the offensive zone. The defensive teams of Carter Swanson with Jake Olinskie and McArthur with Klie frustrated the Shallow Lake offense by keeping the puck out of the Storm zone. They were very effective at clearing the defensive zone time and time again. Cameron Plante had another great game turning away eleven of the Lakers seventeen shots on net.  The netminder’s confidence resulted in a play worthy of the highlight reel as he challenged a Laker forward on a breakaway and bravely pokechecked the puck off the skater’s stick denying him what would have been a great scoring opportunity. The defensive highlight of the afternoon was the fantastic foursome’s continual protection of the defensive zone with nice long clearing shots. The offensive highlight was the improved cycling of the puck in the offensive zone, the fruits of good coaching and practice.  The Allan’s Fireside Grill/TD Canada Trust Atom Local League team has its next game against TCDMHA in Desboro, Wednesday, Nov. 19th.
