Atom L.L. #1 Suffers Loss To Ice Dogs
The Allan’s Fireside Grill/ TD Canada Trust Atom L.L. #1 team faced off against the Arran – Elderslie Ice Dogs on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 9th. The game proved to be a closely contested match through the first two periods as the two teams battled over the puck. The scoring started early as the Ice Dogs got their first goal on a breakaway down centre ice in the opening minutes of the game.  Both teams continued to attack only to have their attempts thwarted by the valiant efforts of each other’s defensive lines.  The Storm finally found a way to even up the tally in the final minute of the period as Thomas MacDonald broke out of the defensive zone and made his way down the ice through the Dog’s defencemen to flip one past the Ice Dog netminder.

The second period began much the same as the first with the Ice Dogs scoring early.  This time the Dogs scored a short handed goal as their player came off the bench in the offensive zone and raced in to send one past the Storm goalie, Cameron Plante. The Dogs continued their attack and scored a third goal as their player caught his own rebound, wrapped around the net and snuck one past the Storm goalie on the far side. That one was a real heartbreaker for the Storm, as netminder Plante, had made a spectacular save on the original shot. The Storm fought their way back though to get their second goal of the game as Jonah Neron sped off on a breakaway down ice to fire the puck past the Dogs goalie. The second period ended in the same manner as the first with a MacDonald breakaway from a faceoff in the final minute resulting in the Storm’s third goal and a tie game going into the third.

The third period saw the Ice Dogs increase their attack and in the end they were just too much for the Storm to handle. Plante, of the Storm, kept his team in the game with his strong goaltending. He maintained his composure as the shots kept coming and denied the Dogs of most of their scoring chances. However, the Ice dogs did score a couple.  The Storm continued to work hard but just couldn’t find their way on to the scoreboard this final period.  A good, solid effort was put forth by the Storm’s defensive lines of Cole McArthur with Levi Klie and Carter Swanson with Jake Olinskie.  The efforts of the three offensive lines of Ben Gundrum with Bill Johnson and Angeline Kimewon, JD Barnard with Jonah Neron and Owen MacKenzie, and Thomas MacDonald with Evan Lamont and Summer Cameron-Nashkewa helped to keep the game relatively close.  The final score was 5-3 in favour of Arran – Elderslie. The Dogs star centre played a role in all five goals, scoring four and assisting on one. Shots on net were 25 -9 for Arran – Elderslie. The Allan’s Fireside Grill/ TD Canada Trust Atom L.L. #1 team have their next game on Saturday, Nov. 15th in Shallow Lake.
