Crabby
Joe’s travelled to Markdale Monday evening to take on the undefeated Grey
Highlands Shooting Stars. The last time these two teams met was in the Finals
in the Shooting Stars Tournament back in November and Crabby’s lost in a
shootout.
The Markdale based team are very stingy, only allowing 10 goals in 13 league games but in the first period Crabby put two into the mesh: Francesca Alpajaro assisted by Olivia Hall and Kennedy Stauffer and Skyler Pomroy from Maddy Leger and Caelan Macdonald. The opportunities were there but Crabby couldn’t get another one behind the big goalie. Not to be overshadowed, Crabby’s Ashley Shields made some sparkling saves of her own, only letting one dribble past her in the third, backstopping Saugeen Shores to a 2 – 1 victory.
The edge in the battles leaned in Crabby Joe’s favour. The line of Olivia, Francesca, and Kennedy produced their chances through hard work and skating and Caelan, Skyler, and Emma Nason had relentless offensive pressure. Caelan and Sky’s two-way game proved to be a thorn in the sides of the Stars stars. In addition, the defence of Maddy Leger, Lauren Macdonald, Lily VanGeel, Emily Russett, and Natalie Brown were very effective on their pinches and closed off the Shooting Stars lanes in their breakaway attempts.
The win moved Crabby Joe’s two points ahead of Grey Highlands for the overall points lead with each team having two regular season games remaining. The final standings are used to decide the top seedings in the year-end league tournament. Upcoming for Crabby Joe’s Atom C team is the Girls International Silver Stick Caitlyn Cobean Memorial Tournament hosted by Saugeen Shores 7th – 9th February. Good luck Girls.
