Crabby Joe's Atom C's Finally Score First
Crabby Joe’s Atom C’s braved the weather  and travelled to Mount Forest Sunday night “for the love of the game”.  Whoever is under the impression that Girls hockey is soft have not witnessed two competitive teams pitted against each other in the Arena.  This game was so entertaining, displaying great goaltending, defence, offence, individualism, teamwork, backchecking, forechecking, you name it it was there.

For the first time this season Crabby’s opened the scoring on a goal from Caelan Macdonald set up by Skyler Pomroy two minutes into the first period.  The period ended that way only because of  the excellent goaltending of Crabby’s  Ashley Shields  and Mt Forest’s Brianna Gordon.  Sky was sent in alone after receiving a nice pass from Kennedy Stauffer and deked  the goalie just 15 seconds into the second period and followed it up two minutes later on a solo effort to put her team up by three.  Mount Forest countered immediately with a power play goal and then off the ensuing faceoff had another one to cut Crabby’s  lead to one.  But Olivia Hall gave the visitors a power play goal of their own with 3 minutes to go in the period and Francesca  Alpajaro restored her team’s three goal lead in the last seconds.

The third period was the same as the first two with up and down action but each team only managed one more  goal with Skyler getting her hattrick.  Final 6 – 3.  As mentioned, this was a hard fought game, 3 penalties to each team,  and aggressive battles throughout.  Strong backchecking from Natalie Brown on every shift along with numerous offensive opportunities earned her the game’s Digger Award.  Weather prevented Emma Nason from getting to the game and the defence of Lily VanGeel, Emily Russett, Madeleine Leger and Lauren Macdonald was helped out by our AP from Owen Sound Novice A team Maddy Linklater. Maddy even filled in a few shifts up front.  Congratulations to Francesca and Kennedy who were Silver Medalists in the Chris Knott Tournament, Atom AE Division this weekend.   Six games in three days makes for a pair of tired but well conditioned athletes.

Practice Monday 5pm Southampton.
