The Saugeen Shores Queen’s Bar & Grill/Giant Tiger Midget Girls team had a very tough game against Markdale Friday night at the Coliseum, losing 2-1 in the dying seconds of the game. The game started well, with both teams skating hard, and playing good hockey. Markdale recorded the first goal in the last minute of the first period, when Saugeen Shores goalie Mackenzie Bertrand got a piece of a high shot with her glove, but failed to stop it completely. The puck bounced over her glove and trickled over the goal line. Early in the second, Bertrand took away a Markdale shorthanded breakaway by skating out of her crease to clear the puck, perhaps preventing a goal. Later in the period, Mackenzie Brown evened the game when her superior skating speed allowed her to come from behind, steal the puck in the Markdale end, and fire a blistering shot into the bottom right corner of the Markdale net. Sarah Thornburn and Brooke Carter assisted on the goal. The game rapidly deteriorated during the third. As the Queen’s Bar & Grill/Giant Tiger team increased the pressure, with 12.1 seconds remaining in the game, Markdale managed a second goal on a scramble in front. By M. Jacqueline Kippers
