Battle of the Shores

After 3 periods of solid hockey, the Dunlop Fuels and Rintoul’s Pool and Spas Atom Girls logged a 0-0 tie against Georgian Shores on Sunday November 14th.

Both teams played strong offensive and defensive hockey.  Saugeen Shores had some good chances in the first including a low shot from the slot by Jamie Miller.  Starting goaltender, Alyssa Trumbley, was tested early but warded off all attempts on net. Forward Amber Hou did a good job of stick checking the Georgian Shores offense while Kaitlin Ferguson tracked the Georgian Shores defence along the boards.   Saugeen Shores’ defensemen played well, sending the puck up the boards to the forward line and showing lots of hustle in their own zone.

Saugeen Shores skated hard in the second period.  Miller, Sasha Morano and Tori Janes worked tirelessly in the Georgian Shores zone, but were unable to put the puck in the net.  Quick skating Victoria Sutter-Lammie was all over the ice, picking up loose pucks and back checking in her own zone.  It looked like Saugeen Shores might take the lead half way through the second when Eve Martin carried the puck up ice on a breakaway.  Martin blasted the puck on net, but the opposition’s goalie made a great save.

The back and forth play continued into the third period.  Tiffany Kewageshig, in net for the second half of the game, made some huge saves to keep Georgian Shores off the scoreboard including one at point blank range at the 11 minute mark.  Saugeen Shores continued to get their chances.  Janes and Carly Acton had a nice rush up ice.   Janes’ pass, however, was intercepted before Acton could get a shot away.  Until the final buzzer Kewageshig remained solid in net, stopping shots with her stick and jumping on loose pucks in the crease to retain the shutout.

With great team work and lots of hustle, the Atom girls racked up their second tie of the season, a scoreless hockey game against Georgian Shores.  The coaches awarded Jamie Miller Player of the Game.   The Atom girls next hit the ice on Friday November 19th at the Coliseum in Southampton against Walkerton.
