Atom Girls compete hard in St. Thomas Tournament

The Dunlop Fuels and Rintoul’s Pool and Spas Atom girls team played a great tournament in St. Thomas on the weekend of December 3-5th , however, the team came away winless.

On Friday night the girls faced a strong London team.  Although the girls skated hard, they were overpowered by a highly skilled London squad.  Sasha Morano worked especially hard in this game, digging the puck from the corners, chasing the opposition up the ice and challenging the St. Thomas defence.  For her efforts, Sasha was awarded Player of the Game by the Saugeen Shores coaching staff.

On Saturday the Atom girls lost 5-0 to the hometown St. Thomas team.  Again the team showed a lot of hustle but just couldn’t put the puck in the net.  Kaitlin Ferguson gave 100% every time she stepped out on the ice.  She worked the boards and skated hard to be the first player to the puck.  In the game against St. Thomas, the Storm coaching staff awarded Kaitlin Player of the Game.

Saugeen Shores saved its closest and most exciting game until last, a 4-2 loss against the London Stingers.

London got on the scoreboard first with a quick goal a couple of minutes into the game.  The Storm rallied back.  On a scramble in front of the net, Tori Sutter-Lammie tucked the puck under the London goalie’s pads to tie the game at one apiece.

Saugeen Shores continued to apply offensive pressure.  Around the six minute mark, Rachel Kelly fed forward Jamie Miller the puck.  Miller headed up the ice with line mates Eve Martin and Sasha Morano.  After some nice passing, Morano ended up putting a lovely backhand shot in the net to give Saugeen Shores the lead.   This lead was short lived as London tied the game in the next minute of play.

London played a strong second period adding two more goals and stretching their lead to two.

Despite strong play by Saugeen Shores’ net minders and power play opportunities in the third, the Atom girls ended up losing their final game of the tournament 4-2.  Teena-Marie Ritchie skated hard for all three periods and was awarded Player of the Game by the Saugeen Shores coaching staff.
