Bantam A/E have strong showing at Sliver Stick
Bantam A/E Storm have strong showing at Silver Stick Submitted by Ryan Lamont The Saugeen Shores Bantam A/E Bruce County Physiotherapy/Lakeshore Recreation team travelled to Collingwood to play in the regional Silver Stick tournament on the weekend. Despite having the flu bug running through their team, the Storm still had a strong showing. In their first game early on Friday against Collingwood, the boys came out flat and could not gain any momentum, they lost the game 5-0. Player of the game was Justin Greig.

The Storm’s second game was against Newcastle. Dave McGinnis made some big saves early on to keep the Storm in the game. Late in the first, Newcastle were able to score and take a 1-0 lead into the second period. Saugeen Shores pressed hard for the equalizing goal in the second, but were unable to score. With three minutes to go in the second, the Storm’s hard work was rewarded when Coulton Hall scored a goal in front of the net with Mack Gallagher and Cal Fraser getting the helpers. Both teams pressed hard for the go ahead goal in the final frame, but neither team could break the tie and the Storm skated away with a 1-1 tie. Player of the game was Hall. On Saturday the Storm were looking for their first win of the season against Huntsville. McGinnis made some huge saves early on to keep the game close. In the second, Harrison Tew went on a nice end to end rush, but was unable to find the back of the net. Duncan Simpson then ringed one off the cross bar. Early in the third, Taylor Schihl went on an end to end rush and was able to score stick side to put the Storm on top 1-0. McGinnis made some more big saves to preserve the one goal lead. With five minutes to go in the game, James Besito won a puck battle on the boards. He broke free but his shot was stopped by the goaltender. He recovered the rebound and passed the puck to Schihl who was parked at the right side of the net and able to score to make it 2-0 Storm. The Storm played good defensive hockey the rest of the game, and held on for a 2-0 win, their first win of the season. Player of the game was Dave McGinnis.

 

The Storm’s record of 1-1-1 was one point shy of advancing them to the. Semi-finals. The Storm’s next action in Tuesday in Goderich, with a home game Friday at 9:00 pm against Blyth in Southampton.
