Atom B’s – Tillsonburg Tournament Champs!
The Saugeen Shores Unifor Atom B team recently attended the Roy Beechey Memorial Tournament in Tillsonburg and returned home with the Championship trophy.

Tillsonburg.  My back still aches when I hear that word.

What a tournament for our group of Atom B players.

Our first game was against Listowel where the boys showed great puck movement and team play to come away with a 4-0 win.

Game two was against a tough St. Mary’s team.   Controlling much of the play throughout the game, the boys gave up the lead late in the third and had to settle for a 2-2 tie.

Game three was against the hometown team Tillsonburg.  The Storm came out flying and quickly set the tone and pace scoring early on and limiting the opposition’s chances coming away with a 4-1 victory.

The semi-final game saw the Storm matched up against Listowel.  Although the Storm peppered the Listowel net with shots, they found themselves in a 2-0 hole with 6 minutes to play.  After relentless hard work the steam finally let go and the storm pushed forward.  The momentum shifted after we scored our first goal to make it 2-1 and then quickly tied the game with less than 2 minutes left in the 3rd.  Overtime was required.  3-on-3 format.  Our bread and butter.  It was over quickly as the Storm finished the comeback on the first shift of the OT frame for a 3-2 win.

The final game was against the town of Tillsonburg.  Once again a great start to the game scoring on the first shift.  This game saw a little bit of everything with the rarely penalized Storm team racking up 10 minutes in penalties.  In all the Unifor Atom B’s spent 8 minutes of the 10 minute 3rd period in the penalty box while trying to maintain a 4-2 lead.  After giving up a shorthanded goal to Tillsonburg to make it 4-3, the Storm were able to answer shorthanded with a goal into an empty net to seal the game and tournament championship with a 5-3 win.

Great job by the defensive pairings of Marshal, Foster, Lettau and Jacklin limiting the opposition’s chances throughout the tournament and the forward lines of Lawrence, Porter, S. Hall, B. Hall, Akerman, Boone, Thomson, Jackson and Bourassa for their hard work at both ends of the ice.  Goaltending was spectacular with key saves at important times of our games by Nakai and Van Geel.

Good job boys!
