Saugeen Storm Atom LL#1 Took on The Shallow Lake Lakers and Saugeen Storm #2 over the Weekend
Another busy weekend for the Atom Saugeen Storm LL #1, Allan’s Fireside Grill. Saturday they took on the Shallow Lake Lakers at the Plex and Sunday they where guests to Storm#2 at the Plex as well.

Storm vs Lakers

The Storm got off to a slow start as the Lakers got up by two goals very early in the first.  They bounced back and battled the remainder of the period getting a few shots on goal but the Lakers netminder was on his game making some great saves.  At the end of the period the Lakers held the lead 2-0.

Once again in the second the Lakers got an early one as the Storm fell behind by three.  Wes got one back shortly after to put his team on the board and the score became 3-1 at 8:34 of the period.  The Lakers continued to skate hard and managed another at near the midpoint of the period.  At the end of the period the score was 4-1 for the Lakers.

The third was not much better for the Storm as the Lakers kept coming and getting some good shots on our net.  They managed 4 more on the period to make the final 8-1.

The Digger Award was Wes’ to take home as he was the only player playing hard the entire game.  Congrats Wes on a great game.

Next Game Sunday at the Plex vs Storm#2 at 12:30pm

Storm#1 vs Storm#2

It is always fun when two Storm teams face off against each other, the stands are full of fans cheering for their favourite players, the players are excited to play against their friends from school, down the street and summer baseball and soccer teams.  This was certainly the case Sunday morning at the Plex as both teams got off to a great start battling hard on the ice.  Storm #2 were awarded a penalty shot very early in the game but luckily the player was unable to get the shot off, Big Save Benny stood in net with confidence as he wasn’t going to let his team down early in the game.  One comment after the game is that Ben scared the player with his death stare and that is why the shot never got off.  Shortly after this Storm#2 scored on a shot that Ben just about had but managed to trickle through him at 9:18.  The period continued and Storm#1 was playing really hard and not giving Storm#2 any chances to move with the puck keeping lots of pressure on their opponent and getting many shots off.  We saw some fantastic work from our wingers Smiley, Peter, Sabra, Ismail, Jack, Charlie and Jake as they really battled hard for loose pucks and but tones of pressure on the other teams defensemen and always skating back to our end hard to help out.  Despite their great work Storm#1 remained behind 1-0 at the end of the first.

The second was even better for the Storm #1 as they continued battling and skating hard.  They were all over Storm#2 all period long but could not get one past the netminder on several great chances.  The Centers Wes, Nick and Riley were great in all three zones on the ice but most importantly in their own helping out the defense and moving the puck out and down the ice and helping create chances on net.  Storm #2 really looked like the better team as they skated hard and battled players not waiting for the puck to come to them.  The solid Defensemen had their hands full shutting down some pretty talented guys but Ian, Andy, Zach, Josh, Talan and Andrew handled it not problem.  We also saw them really fighting on the blueline trying to keep the puck in the offensive zone  and managing shot on net when they saw the lane open.  This great work and determination paid off on a great breakout from our own end were Riley took off out the zone on a fast break.  He managed to get around the defense and took a wicked shot on goal that could not be handled.  Hunter and Ismail flowed up as the rebound lay there waiting and Ismail was able to hammer it home tying the game @ 2:18 of the second with Riley and Hunter getting the assists on the play.  At the period end of the second, Storm#1 was up 2-1 due to some great work by the entire team especially Big Save Benny making some key stops when the team needed him.

The third was just as exciting as the other two and the Storm#1 looked like a hard fighting team that wasn’t giving up, they got a few chances early but unable to penetrate the net.  Storm #2 tied it 9:57 but Storm #1 kept up the fight battling hard.  Storm #2 scored again at 7:29 to put them up by one but still Storm#1 tried their hardest and really worked for another goal but could not get past the tender at the other end of the ice.  Storm#2 scored another at 1:34 and that proved to be the last goal of the game making the final 4-2 for Storm#2.

This was a great game and the best one Storm#1 has played yet this season.  Everyone was working hard and doing everything they could for their teammates and the coaches are quite proud as they could have easily won the game.  Big Save Benny was awarded the Digger Award for his great performance in net.  Good Job Ben!!! And Great Game Team!!!!
