The BDO Dunwoody Atom BB team travelled to Shelburne on Saturday, December 12th to take part in the ShelBurne Minor Hockey  Tournament.  The Atom BB team, with Jacob Ackert in net, faced off first against the Wasaga Stars from Wasaga Beach.  Things got off to a rollicking start with a tight first period as the action sailed back and forth from end to end.  Michael Fiegehen, assisted by Jack Middleton, lit up the scoreboard with the first goal of the game late in the first period. The quick paced game play continued into the second period when the Storm opened the floodgates, racking up four unanswered goals. The Wasaga Stars rallied in the third as the play from both teams continued to be fast and furious.  However, the Storm team kept the Stars off the scoreboard, earning themselves a well deserved shutout. The final score was 5-0 for the BDO Dunwoody Atoms.

After a short one hour rest, the Storm took on the host team, the Shelburne Wolves.  Jack Flarity filled the spot between the pipes for the BDO Dunwoody Atoms.  Once again the play proved to be rocking as the teams skated the puck zone to zone.  Both teams traded some scoring opportunities but the game remained scoreless until late in the third period when the Wolves took advantage of an extended scramble in front of the Storm net to bang one home.  The Storm team continued to mount their offensive attack but could not find a way to get past the lightning fast glove hand of the Shelburne netminder. The Wolves would win this one, 1-0.

With one convincing win and one close loss, the points system put the BDO Dunwoody Atom BB team through to the “A” Division final against the Mt. Brydges Cougars.  This game would prove to be as exciting as the first two as both teams put the pedal to the metal and came out with strong starts.  The Cougars scored a couple of goals in the first period. The Storm team was unable to answer back and they would enter the second period down by two goals. The BDO Dunwoody Atoms would gain some momentum during that second period as Michael Fiegehen and Will Rickerby paired up to net a couple for their team. Fiegehen, assisted by Rickerby, was the first Storm player to put one up on the board and then Rickerby, assisted by Fiegehen and Kelly Cobean added another one to tie up the game. The Cougars quickly responded by adding one more to their tally before heading into the third. The back and forth play continued into the final period.  Storm forward, Paul Leger, assisted by Justin Marlowe scored a sweet goal late in the third to tie the game at 3 apiece. Again the Cougars bounced back to quickly score one more, putting them back in the lead. The Storm team put forth an impressive effort to try and even the score once again but the Cougars would seal the deal in the dying moments of the game after another extended scramble in front of the Storm net when they would manage to dig the puck out from under the glove of Storm goalie, Jacob Ackert, and shove it over the line to net their fifth goal of the game. The Storm team would have to settle for runner-up in this match. Congratulations to Will Rickerby for receiving MVP of the game, a well deserved honor since the rockets he launched from the wing consistently called for the Cougars goalie to be at the top of his game.  As such, it was no small surprise that the game MVP for the Mt. Brydges team was their netminder, Ben Berfelz.

Congratulations to the entire BDO Dunwoody Atom BB team, players and coaches, for a well played tournament. Forwards, Eric Charlebois, Michael Fiegehen, Will Rickerby, Thomas MacDonald, Murray Martin, Nick Sutter-Lammie, Justin Marlowe, Paul Leger and Korey Thomas did a great job developing their passing game and firing shots on net.  The defensive pairings of Kelly Cobean with Kent Ribey and William Forsyth with Jack Middleton deserve recognition for their outstanding job at forcing their opponents out to bad ice and effectively clearing their zone. Finally, a round of applause for Jacob Ackert and Jack Flarity for standing tall in net and keeping their team in the game time after time. A job well done by every member of the team as it was an admirable group effort that put the team through to the “A” Division final. Nicely done boys.
