Open letter to the members of Saugeen Shores Minor Hockey Association

Dear members:

As most of you have heard, a couple of weeks ago, the canteen at the Plex and the Skate Sharpening Shop at the Plex were broken into and a significant amount of money was taken from the cash registers in both locations. While we consider this a very unfortunate event, the biggest hardship for both businesses is the breeding of miss-trust that this offence has caused. Money is only money, but trust is such a valuable commodity, that it is something that should be kept at all costs if possible.

We are writing this letter to make sure that all of Minor hockey realizes what an honorable group we have in our community.

Shortly after the theft, a group of parents and players from minor hockey teams (specifically Atom LL #1, Pee Wee AE, and Bantam “B”) took it upon themselves to donate some money which was given the owners of the two businesses that were affected. While we want to make it clear that this donation was in no way asked for, or necessary, it very much helped to ease the financial blow of the theft and more importantly, helped to restore our faith in humanity. The fact that the kids and the parents dug in to their pockets at a time like this tells us that the community that we live in is sitting in a very good place and it is a good feeling to know that so many people really want to do good.

On behalf of Dina and Tom Montgomery, and Mary Ellen and Gord Lamont, we sincerely thank the athletes and parent who donated and all of the others who have expressed their concern since the break-ins.

Looking forward to next season

Dina, Tom, Mary Ellen and Gord
