Novice Development
Where has the novice development gone?

This has been a common question this year.  There are a few reasons the association is not having a novice development hour each week this year.

First, we had huge influx of tyke hockey players register in September after budgeting for ice time had been completed. We used the novice development ice time to cover this influx of players.

Secondly, we have done away with shared practices for novice and have increased the length of practices for Atom and above.  For example, Atom practice time has increased from 50 minutes to 65.

Finally, and more importantly, the association came to the realization that this wasn’t an effective model for development.  To be truly effective, development needs to be association-wide, not just novice age players. Also, we need to develop the volunteers who are with our players from October to March --> our coaches.

Now our challenge is to find some replacement ice time (the novice development ice time was to be used for coach instruction) to “coach our coaches”.  Our first endeavour “to coach our coaches” is to hold a goalie clinic for our coaches & goalies on Nov.1. This aligns with our weekly goalie school on Wednesday nights.  Please check the website for further Development updates.
