Pee Wee & Midget Girls Wrap Up
It was a busy weekend (Mar 22-23) for Saugeen Shores Girls’ hockey, with the Storm Midget and Pee Wee girls’ teams wrapping up their WOAA seasons as they all participated in their WOAA year-end tournaments.

Despite a very short bench of only 6 skaters, the Port Elgin Lions Club Midget HL team played their hearts out in Ripley but lost their two qualifying games to Grey Highlands C and Bruce Peninsula HL.  The two losses meant they would not advance to Sunday’s championship game, but coach David Kelly was very proud of the effort the girls put forth.

The Ziegler Castle Lumber Pee Wee HL girls finished their qualifying round in Wallace with a 1-1 record, dropping the first game to West Grey HL 2-1, but bouncing back in the afternoon with a 3-1 victory over South Bruce HL.  The victory put the girls in the consolation final  against Walkerton HL on Sunday where they unfortunately came out on the losing end of a 3-2 overtime decision.

The Giant Tiger Pee Wee C team went undefeated in their qualifiers in Howick with a 2-2 tie in the morning against Blyth/Brussels C followed by a victory over Mount Forest C by a score of 2-0.  Their record put them in the championship game on Sunday against season long rivals West Grey C.  Alas, in their sixth meeting of the year, West Grey came out on top and were crowned WOAA champs with a 1-0 double overtime win as the Storm girls celebrated their third silver medal of the season.

The Port Elgin Lions Club Midget C girls got to stay closer to home as their year end wrap up  took place in Tiverton.  The girls came up just short in their first game, losing 1-0 to Lucknow/Wingham C, but rebounded in the second game, taking a 6-2 decision against West Grey C.  The win was enough to put them into Sunday’s final against Tiverton, which the Storm won in convincing fashion by a score of 4-1.  The win earned our girls the title of WOAA Consolation Champs.

Congratulations to all of the players, staff and parents on a very successful and enjoyable season for all four teams.

Despite the “year end” feel to the weekend, there still remains  lots of girls’ hockey for Saugeen Shores as we will be hosting the WOAA Atom Year End tournament next weekend (Mar 29-30).  Our Bantam C team will be travelling to Ayton that same weekend for their year end games, and our Atom C, Pee Wee C and Midget C teams will be travelling to Toronto on April 11-12 to participate in the OWHA Provincial finals.

Good luck to all of the girls!!
