Greetings SSMHA Hockey Families:Wondering how you can get ahead on some of your life goals while being trapped inside during the COVID crisis? How about getting some courses to help out as a volunteer with the Saugeen Shores Minor Hockey Association?
Every year, we need on-ice volunteers with our youngest skaters, Trainers, Coaches, Managers and Executive team! The Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) requires that all of these volunteers take part in courses to ensure that they are allowed to volunteer in these roles, and can be insured to work with young players. You can find the links to get these courses on our website:
https://ssmha.com/Pages/10478/How_to_Volunteer_and_or_become_Bench_Staff/
But here's a summary:
FIRST - Get your Gender Identification and Expression Course because this is FREE and takes the least time and gets you an e-hockey account if you don't already have one. Takes a bit over an hour. This is a required course to be a volunteer with any team in any way except to collect gate fees. It can be used for multiple activities with kids, not just hockey.

TIPS - 1. Make sure you assign your OWN NAME AS THE PARTICIPANT, not the name of your player. You are the bench staff, not your child. You may have to ADD your name as a participant at the first screen. 2. When assigning an association please pick SSMHA or you will be assigned to OHF and I won't be able to 'find' you.3. It looks like the course is being offered in Cambridge as that is where the Ontario Hockey Federation office is, but it is entirely ONLINE.
SECOND - Get your Respect in Sport for Activity Leaders Course. This takes about 3 hours and we now have a super-duper code so that you don't have to pay for it yourself. Please see the attachment for details. The code is: SS-MHA-F2H3C9V.
The course costs $35+HST, so if you forget to submit the code please send your receipt to our treasurer
[email protected] for reimbursement. This is a required course to be a volunteer with any team in any way except to collect gate fees. It can be used for multiple activities with kids, not just hockey.

When you have done both of these courses, let the registrar know so that you can be added to our volunteer list:
[email protected]
We will not get any notification of your completion other than you letting us know.
THIRD - Take the Trainers Course (Trainer 1), this is an online course and can be done in stages. It is one of the very important volunteer positions in the association because Trainers are in charge of safety. All teams must have a Trainer present to be on the ice/bench at any time. The course takes 5-6 hours and costs $85+HST, which is again reimbursed by SSMHA. Please send your receipt to our treasurer
[email protected] for reimbursement.

FOURTH - Anyone wished to get their coaching certifications can take a look at the course offerings through:

The HU (Hockey University) Online Coach 1/2 is a prerequisite online course to be taken in advance of any in-person coaching course, so that's a great place to start. That course is about 4 hours and costs $30+HST, again reimbursed by the association, please see above.
https://ehockey.hockeycanada.ca/ehockey/ClinicDetail.aspx?cid=130601
Coach 1 is the course that is required to work with kids in divisions U-10 and below. This is a one-day in-class and on-ice course that costs $150+HST and is offered at various locations in Ontario. There are currently none on offer due to the shut down of services due to COVID19, but that will be the place to look for courses.
Coach 2 is the course that is required to work with kids in divisions above U-10.
Development 1 is the course that is required to work with kids at rep level above U-10.Please send your receipt to our treasurer
[email protected] for reimbursement.
Again, once you have completed a coaching course please let the registrar know so that you can be put on the At-Large bench staff roster as a coach:
[email protected]
We really hope you will take this opportunity for getting some courses under your belt BEFORE the next hockey season. It is always a scramble in the fall to get enough names to keep all the teams going. This is a great time to ensure that we are prepared.
Many thanks!--Karly Johnson, Registrar
