OWHA Athlete Wellness Sessions
SSMHA is excited to announce the continuation of the OWHA Athlete Wellness program.
These sessions are subsidized by the SSMHA and sponsored by Bruce County Chiropractic and Rehabilitation (BCCR) Center. Last year there was amazing feedback from the athletes that attended the session regardless of the age. All of the athletes left sweaty and with a smile.
It is truly important to train your young athletes for hockey, but also to teach them lessons regarding nutrition, stretching and preparing one's body for sport. All of these are lessons that go beyond the ice and after hockey as well.
Key components of the program, which will be led by Laura Barfoot and her team, include:
- 3 athlete wellness sessions for the U13 age group held at the BCCR center with a focus on body movements and pre and post activity stretching. Teaching these young athletes on preparing one's body for sport.
- 4 athlete wellness sessions for each of the U15 and U18 groups held at the BCCR center. This will focus on body movements, flexibility, pre/post activity and building on the preparation for sport.
- the teachings will be age group specific/focused as we feel it is important to be able to relate to the athlete and their age.
As noted this will be subsidized by the SSMHA, but there will be a small cost for this opportunity. We are currently setting the background for registration of this opportunity in RAMP and will send out a second note when it is ready.
The structure will be as such:
For the U13 Wellness sessions the pay structure will be $36 for the 3 sessions.
For the U15 and U18 sessions the pay structure will be $48 for the 4 sessions
In order to facilitate and prepare for the program we will not be offering single session pricing. I would encourage that the athletes attempt to get to each session, but the sponsorship by the BCCR and subsidization by the SSMHA make this program allow this to be a very economical option to get such high quality instruction.
The dates will be as follows:
U13 Wellness Sessions: Sept 19th at 5pm, Sept 26th at 5pm, and Oct 3rd at 5pm
U15Wellness sessions: Sept 12th at 5pm, Sept 19th at 6pm, Sept 26th at 6pm and Oct 3rd at 6pm.
U18Wellness sessions: Sept 5th at 6pm, Sept 12th at 6pm, Sept 26th at 7pm and Oct 3rd at 7pm.
Note the U18 program does skip the Sept 19th as one of the U18 teams is away at a tournament that weekend. Sign up for the sessions can be done through RAMP. The same site as you would register your players for the season or the body positioning clinics.

We will also be encouraging some of the trainers of the teams to observe to be able to reinforce the habits through the year, but also see the various warm up and cooldown ideas.
Last year we offered the nutritionalist Rachel Hannah that came in to speak to our athletes. We are hoping to bring her back next year on a bi annual basis as the female athletes progress through the different age groups.
Please pass along any questions you have. we are really looking forward to getting this program under way for our female athletes to create memories and lessons for life.
Thanks,
Mike McNabb
