The atmosphere was more electrifying than a hairdryer in a hot tub at the Frank Doherty Arena in Thorold, November 19 to 21st. The Doherty Arena, built in 1936, provides cozy confines for teams playing physical hockey, and the Port Elgin Legion U13 B Storm did not disappoint, as their runaway train rolled through the preliminary rounds undefeated.
First stop was a worthy Wallaceburg team, who battled hard but came up on the short end of a 4-0 result. A tough Thorold team, the hosts, scored with 2 seconds left in the game to make the score close at 2-1, but it was another victory for The Storm. Next up was an old nemesis in the potent Listowel Cyclones, who fought bravely until the end of a 5-2 game, won, again by The Storm. The final game of the preliminary round saw The Storm steamroll their way to a 3-3 tie over Mooretown, whose penalty indiscipline left them open to a stunning Storm powerplay goal in the dying seconds.
The Port Elgin Legion U13 B Storm team game up short in the final, losing a close 3-1 game to take home the well-deserved Silver medals. This was the first loss of the season for the, up to then, undefeated Storm team. The next long winning streak starts soon. Congratulations to all the players on the team, and thanks, as always, to the coaches and parents who have helped to mold this group of players into a successful team.
