This Thanksgiving weekend, the U11C Storm girls hockey team travelled to Milton to compete in WickFest — a full-on celebration of girls’ hockey and empowerment hosted by the legendary Hayley Wickenheiser.
The Storm came out flying in their opening game, defeating the Wilmot Wolverines in a commanding 14–0 win. Their second matchup brought a tougher challenge against the North Halton U11B Twisters. The Storm jumped to a quick 2–0 lead before the Twisters battled back to tie the game 2–2, setting the stage for a potential rematch later in the tournament.
Saturday morning began with a special power-skating session led by Michele Moore Davison, one of the skating coaches for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Energized and inspired, the girls hit the ice again to face the Guelph Gryphons, earning a 5–0 victory. They capped off round-robin play with a 4–2 win over the Nepean Wildcats, securing first place overall and a berth in the gold medal game — a rematch with the Twisters.
In the final, the Storm struck early, scoring in the first period and holding onto the lead through an intense, hard-fought battle. With strong defense, teamwork, and determination, the Storm claimed a thrilling 1–0 win to take home gold.
Following the victory, the girls received their medals from Hayley Wickenheiser herself. Throughout the weekend, players had the opportunity to meet several former Team Canada stars and even current PWHL players, including Natalie Spooner from the Toronto Sceptres.
It was an unforgettable weekend of hockey, friendship, and girl power — full of memories, sportsmanship, and teamwork. Congratulations to the U11C Storm on an incredible performance at WickFest!
