Saugeen Shores Atom Rep Storm Came Up Short In Close Match Against Goderich Sailors
The Saugeen Shores Atom Rep Storm, sponsored by UNIFOR, posted their first loss of the season in a hard fought match against the Goderich Sailors on Sunday afternoon at the Port Elgin Plex.  The game opened with the Storm putting together several strong offensive drives that put the Goderich goalie on his toes making some early saves to avoid a repeat of the first period blow-out in the Storm’s first meeting with the Sailors.

Goderich responded with some strong drives by their forward line and opened the scoring with a rebound scramble half way through the period.  Twenty seconds later Chase Cosgrove broke through and put the puck top corner in a solo effort to tie the game 1-1.  Goderich came back with a breakaway of their own, but Storm net-minder Kaine Myers made a great save to keep the score tied.  The Storm nearly took the lead near the end of the period with a passing play across the blue line to a centering pass and a shot that just narrowly missed the net leaving the score tied at the end of the first period.

The second period started with the same intensity and evenly matched end-to-end play of the first period until Goderich took the lead with an unassisted breakaway goal part way through the period.  The Storm fought back with a few great chances of their own, and Kai Bailey took advantage of a slow Goderich change to tie the game 2-2.  Both teams had a bit of offside trouble in the second period ending some offensive drives before they got going.  With two minutes left in the period Goderich took the lead with a breakaway goal off of a Storm turnover.  The final Storm scoring chance of the period was a shot off the goal post that left the Sailors ahead 3-2 at the end of the second.

The final period of the game may have been the most intense period of play so far this season as the entire Storm team fought to tie up the game.  Drive after drive was broken up by the Sailor defensive line and the many Storm shots on net were stopped in a top notch performance by the Sailor goal-keeper.  The exciting Storm chances and the empty net 6 on 5 offensive in the closing minutes of play had fans at the edge of their seats, but the home squad came up just short as the buzzer sounded with Goderich still ahead 3-2.  Defenseman Greyson Wolfe was named player of the game for his solid performance in the defensive zone and great support in the many Storm offensive efforts.  The team has two mid-week practices to regroup and come back strong as they head down to Wingham on Saturday for a 12:15 pm game against the Ironmen.  Go Storm!
