Weekend of November 7-8
Busy weekend for the Allan's Fireside Atom AE this weekend, with travel to Zurich and a home game at the Plex.

On November 7, 2015 the Allan's Fireside AE Atom team traveled to Zurich for the rematch of last weeks home game at the Plex.  With a 5:30pm puck drop, the game was our first evening game of the season.  The game didn't take too long to get exciting, just a mere 24 seconds into the game L. Noe had his team on the board, unassisted.  With the play going both ways, our goalie was certainly showing he was up to the task, as C. Lettau stopped the Zurich Thunder's best attempts, even using his head at one point to keep the game just out of grasp.  Getting some goal support wasn't an issue either, as a 1 minute 27 seconds after Noe's goal, J. Legge came up with a great unassisted goal as well, at 7:57.  The play was tough, and our team was controlling the zone well, keeping a lot of the action in the home team's end, which paid off at the 3:54 mark of the period, when T. Martin assisted on A. Guo's shot to put the team up by a score of 3-0 late in the first.  With time ticking down it loooked as though we were going to carry a 3 goal lead into the second frame, but with a mere 1 second left on the clock, C. McCulloch fired one home unassisted, to make it a commanding 4-0 at the sound of the horn.

The second period opened up with a lot of exciting play, still in control  of this game, the Storm kept the puck in the opposing teams end.  At 9:22 the Storm struck again, this time J. Van Geel, from C. Cumming, made it a 5-0 game.  As far as this point, there was very little break down in the offense and defense of this team, keeping pressure in the home team's end, and allowing very little through to C. Lettau, until late in the period, on a stretch pass out of their end at 0:05 in the frame, the Thunder finally squeaked one past our tender.  At the end of 2 the score was a lob sided 5-1 in favour of the Storm.

Period 3 opened up with a quick goal at the 9:25 mark from the home team, to show that they were still here to play, and made it 5-2.  We've all seen how this plays out before though, and our Storm team just gets right fired up when those goals go against us.  32 seconds later, at 8:53 on the clock, J. Legge, scored, assist going to C. Hoffman, and the Storm began to rain down.  21 seconds after Legge scored, at 8:32, W. Nason from J. Van Geel, made it 7-2, then again, less than 2 minutes later, L. Harris bulged the twine at 6:41 of the frame, unassisted.  At 5:31, the Thunder put in their 3rd and final goal of the game, as the Storm played a great shutdown game and kept the pressure deep in the opposing end.  With a final score of 8-3 the kids should be proud of themselves.

Sunday, November 8, the Plex would be the site of our first meeting against the Howick Hornets.  Never seeing this team in action, our Allan's Fireside Storm came out and threw everyting we had at the Hornets.  The kids kept the play in the opposing team's end, and at the 5:25 mark, W. Nason made no mistake from O. Pope to take a 1-0 lead.  This opened the flood gates, and the the Storm surge washed over Howick.  at 4:23, A. Guo buried a beauty from C. Hoffman.  Then at 2:05 L. Noe sniped a shot past the Hornets tender, with assists going to A. Guo and L. Harris respectively.  26 seconds later L. Noe got his second of the frame, at 1:41, with the assist going to J. Legge.  This ended the scoring for the period, as we took a 4-0 lead to the second period.

The second period, the Hornets seemed to have a handle on our players, and kept us at bay.  We managed a good number of great chances, only to be robbed by a very determined Howick goaltender.  At the other end of the rink, C. Lettau played solid on the shots he had to face, but his defenders were solid, and didn't allow a whole lot of shots to penetrate the zone.  We also saw some great back checking from our forwards, always covering the defense when they pinched, basically putting up a wall between our zone and the attacking team.  The lone goal of the second period came off the stick of A. Guo, his second of the day, at 0:03 in the period, to net the buzzer beater, from L. Harris.

Taking a 5-0 lead into the third, most teams would be happy to play defense and stroll away with the win...I said "most" teams, but our Storm team was just building momentum.  J. Legge started the period off, only 36 seconds in with a feed from N. Meleski, to make it 6-0.  Then at the 12:13 mark of the frame, while on a 5 on 3 penalty kill, N. Meleski streaked in and sent an unassisted laser past the Honets goalie for a shorthanded goal. less than a minute later at 11:21, T. Martin notched the teams second shorthanded goal of the period unassisted.  Then just a minute ten later, at 10:10 J. Van Geel found W. Nason for his second of the game to make it 9-0.  The little goaltender from Howick was shell shocked, but never let it bother him, and for the next eight and a half minutes, he turned everything aside that our kids threw at him, then at the 1:21 mark in the period, H. Palinsky hit L. Harris with a pass, and Harris let a hard wrister go, and O. Pope tipped it past the opposing team goalie.  Less than a minute after that great play L. Noe potted his hattie goal, third of the day with 35 seconds remaining in regulation time.  14 seconds later at 0:21 on the clock, W. Nason dished one back to the point and T. Martin bagged his second of the frame.  That's how it ended, 12-0 decisive victory over the visiting Hornets.  Congratulations go out to C. Lettau for his first of what I am sure will be many shutouts, and great play all weekend long to the kids.  Nice work team!
