Atom C Girls Suffer OT Loss In SilverStick
Crabby Joe’s Girls began the Silver Stick with two victories on opening day of the prestigious Caitlyn Cobean Memorial International Silver Stick Tournament hosted by Saugeen Shores 7th – 9th Feb.

A hard fought 4 – 3 win over the North Middlesex Parkhill Jr Stars in their first game showed they were bona fide contenders.  Every player was on her game from goaltender Ashley Shields on out.  Skyler Pomroy with two, Caelan Macdonald with one, and Olivia Hall with the game winner in the third period had the crowd pumped. Assists in the game went to Caelan, Maddy Leger, and Kennedy Stauffer. Game MVP went to Olivia and the  Digger Award was earned by Natalie Brown for her heat-seeking missile drive to  the puck throughout  the game.

Crabby’s second game on Friday was against the TCDMHA Atom C girls. This was a familiar team from the WOAA Girls League and on the first shift  Francesca Alpajaro opened the scoring assisted by Olivia Hall. Skyler Pomroy potted a beauty with help from Caelan Macdonald and Maddy Leger to end the first period with Saugeen up by two. Skyler  added her second  in the second to give Crabby a three goal cushion with assists to Caelan and Lauren Macdonald.   TCDMHA responded immediately with a marker to stay within reach, ending the period at 3 – 1. Ashley stayed focused and made the timely saves when called upon and Caelan from Olivia early in the third closed out the game scoring. Final 4 – 1 Crabby’s.  Lily VanGeel was presented the Digger and Ashley Shields captured the Game’s MVP.

Saugeen Shores third opponent was Woodstock with the game played in Paisley on Saturday afternoon. This was a crucial game, the winner advancing to the semi-finals on Sunday.  Francesca Alpajaro broke in mid-way through the first to score the game’s first goal. But a breakdown on the ensuing faceoff resulted in Woodstock tieing it up. In the middle frame,  the line of Olivia Hall, Kennedy Stauffer, and Francesca worked together with Olivia putting in a hard backhander.  The Woodstock goalie stymied Skyler Pomroy time and again but finally #2 powered a goal opening up the third period to give her team a little breathing room.  Woodstock bounced back with a goal to make it 3 – 2 but that was it. Saugeen Shores would play GreyHighlands in the semi-final’s Sunday Morning. Francesca donned the Digger and Skyler was presented the Game MVP.

Semi-Finals: The top two local area Atom Girl’s teams. In the season’s opening tournament GreyHighlands defeated Saugeen Shores in a shootout to win. In the WOAA Girls League, GreyHighlands sit on top of their Division as does Saugeen in theirs. In their divisional crossover game Saugeen won. This was the rubber match.  The winner would move on to the SilverStick Finals. GreyHighlands struck first, capitalizing on a broken play  at 5:55 and despite numerous opportunities, Saugeen’s shooters couldn’t solve the Highland’s goaltender.  The lead went to two in the first minute of the second period yet the control of play would say otherwise.  Finally in the last minute of the period  Francesca Alpajaro lit up the red light assisted by Kennedy Stauffer and Olivia Hall. The third period promised to be a doozy. Up and down the ice, missed chances at both ends, and in the last minute of regulation Caelan Macdonald from Kennedy and Olivia tied it up. Pandamonium! It was going to be decided in Overtime. There was of course controversy a plenty. Kennedy Stauffer was cross checked and suffered a head injury, a Highlander player came out of the penalty box early and scored a goal which was disallowed, at least a twenty minute delay followed with heated discussion. In the end Greyhighlands scored the OT winner with 3 minutes left and went on to the Finals.  Congratulations are extended to Lucan on winning the Championship. Wish we could have met.
