Midget Girls HL Cambridge Tournament
On Jan 10, 2014, the Midget HL girls were ready and roaring to play the first game of their tournament against the Grimsby Gryphons Black team.  Samantha Harvie opened the game with a goal on a pass from Leah Tuck and Teaghan Johnston.  The Gryphons replied late in the first. The second period traded end to end rushes but both goalies held firm.  The third period saw our girls score 3 goals, the first from Kristina Huys on a pass from Bronwyn Berry and Angeline Kimewon while Johnston buried the puck on a pass from Leah Fowler and Harvie as well as Fowler connecting with Johnston again who made no mistake to complete her hat trick on the night....

Shantel Coughlan and Charity Ritchie may not have made it to the score sheet but both were instrumental in digging in the corners.  Grimsby Gryphons scored 2 goals late in the third but came up short as the Saugeen Shores Midgets won 4-3.  Great start for our tournament.

At 8:30 pm, our girls came up against the Windsor Wildcats.  Kimewon scored a beautiful goal on a pass from Harvie and Sarah Kelly while Tuck found the back of the net on a pass from Kimewon and Berry.  Heather Kozak in goal played an excellent game but the girls came up short as the Windsor Wildcats won 4-2.

Saturday saw our girls back at the mall arena to play against the Cambridge Roadrunners White team.  We had a lot of good passes, chances, skating hard and stops from Kozak but the White team won 5-0.  That loss put us in the third place in our Pool.  Our last opponent would be the third place finisher from Pool A, Lakeshore Lightning from Windsor.

Our last game was played in the Dickson arena which is like the old Port Elgin arena with the fans close to the ice and cold.  The girls were able to watch an exciting playoff game between 2 novice rep girls team.  Good reminder for our girls to play every shift as if it were their last shift of the game.

The first period belonged to the goalies.  Both teams had ample opportunity to bury the puck but Kozak and her counterpart stood strong.  The second period was ours as Harvie made no mistake and buried the puck for the go-ahead goal at 2:54.  Everyone had chances but Kozak stood firm guarding the net.  With 2:15 left in the third, Berry caused a turnover and had a breakaway that saw an awesome goal as a result.  The fans went wild!  The Lightning replied with a breakaway goal at 1:59. The arena fans were tense as the Lightning coach pulled their goalie in favor of the extra attacker.  Kozak continued to make the saves as our girls fought to help her.  Harvie crossed center and dumped the puck in.  She outworked the other team BUT an opposing player stopped the puck with her gloves in the goal crease.  Harvie was awarded a penalty shot with 10 seconds left.  She made no mistake about beating the goalie for a 3-1 win for a 5th place finish in the Cambridge Roadrunner Tournament.

Way to go players, coaching staff and fans.  A fun time was had by all.
