Promising Start to the Season
The Port Elgin Veterinary Clinic/Giant Tiger Peewee House League Girls have had a promising start to their season so far. At their first home game, facing the Owen Sound Ice Hawks C girls, the girls exploded out of the gate. Paige Akerman potted the first goal of the season for the team. Charlotte Berry also scored a goal, and then Jayedyn Solomon finished off the win with an astounding 4 goals. Forward Alicia Beauchamp’s digging in the corners helped make several of the key plays. Keyanna Kimewon started the year with a shut-out. An auspicious start!

The next two games were on the road. First the girls travelled to Mildmay, where they faced a tougher challenge. The South Bruce House League Girls defeated the Storm 3-1. Again, the girls showed good effort and improving team chemistry. The Storm girls then travelled to Mount Forest, to face the House League Rams, who despite many favourable chances out-scored the Storm Girls 2-0. However, the Storm knew that they would be facing the same opponent the next day during a home-and-home series.

Back at the Plex, the girls seemed revived by the hometown cheering, and Jayedyn Solomon scored the Storm’s first and only goal in the game. Forwards Paige Akerman, Charlotte and Josie Berry, Lauren Kahgee, Leigha Roote, Renee Brown all had good chances in the Mount Forest end, but were finding it tough to put the biscuit in the back of the net. The defensive pairings of Kaitlin Ferguson/Jolina McLean and Carly Acton/ Layla Cushnie continued adding offensive pressure by keeping the Rams hemmed into their own end and getting strong shots from the blue line. The Rams also had good opportunities in our end of the ice, and the Rams pressed our team hard. Keyanna Kimewon stood on her head and made many sharp saves. On a penalty advantage and despite the Storm’s best effort, the Rams were able to tie up the game. The Rams promise to be a challenging team in the future. The Port Elgin Veterinary Clinic/Giant Tiger Peewee House League Girls have a practice on Monday, November 4 before they meet the South Bruce girls again next Saturday at the Southampton Coliseum.
