Sutton Huron Shores Realty Storm Qualify for League Championship Series
The Sutton Huron Shores Realty Storm finished 5-1 and captured the top seed in their 7 team round robin playoff.  This qualifies them to play for the best of 3 league championship final.

Feb 15-16

The first game of the round robin pitted the Storm against the Bruce Peninsula North Stars who finished 2nd during the regular season and ended the year on a 10 game winning streak.  The Storm was ready for the challenge and started by scoring 4 goals in the first 6 minutes of the game.  From that point forward the game was very even with both teams trading chances and the North Stars displaying a high level of passing.  However the slow start was too much for the North Stars to overcome and the Storm were able to hold on for a 6-4 victory.

The following day Sutton Realty Storm took on rivals Saugeen Shores #1.  This game was an exciting one for the fans in attendance as both teams relied on good defensive play and solid goaltending to keep the scoring to a minimum.  The game was tied 1-1 late in the third period when the Sutton Realty Storm was able to pick up two goals and skate away with a 3-1 win.

Logan Bursey was great in goal for the Storm and picked up the win in both games.  The Storm’s offense led the charge on the weekend and was carried by Jason Legge, Hunter Palinsky, Chad Lawerence, and Malachi McKinnon who all picked up multiple points over the two games.

Feb 22-23

Sutton Realty Storm faced another local rival in the third game of the playoffs as they squared off against Saugeen Shores #3 who had given them a good battle in their previous two games this season.  And Saugeen Shores #3 came out flying in this contest, scoring the first goal just 10 seconds into the game.  However Sutton Realty Storm was able to score on the next shift and quickly draw even.  The game calmed down from there and eventually ended in a 5-1 victory for Sutton Realty Storm, improving their record to 3-0 in the playoffs.

The next day the Storm hosted Shallow Lake Lakers #2 and was prepared for a good test from this highly ranked opponent.  Sutton Realty came out fast and was able to build up an early lead.  The Storm continued to work hard throughout the game and had some bounces go their way, ultimately coming away with a 6-1 win.

Ozzie Alpaugh and Jack Baerg split the games in goal and both played tremendous.  The defensive group of Cameron Cumming, Ella Marshall, Logan Bursey, and Sean Moorehead played excellent positional hockey and combined with excellent back-checking and two-way play from Charlie Marshall to hold the opposition to just 2 goals over the 2 games.

MAR 2-3

Sutton Realty Storm entered their game with Saugeen Shores #4 needing a win to clinch first place in round robin play.  The game proved to be an even one and was back and forth throughout.  Oddly all the scoring in the first two periods came on shorthanded goals and after 2 periods Sutton Realty Storm was clinging to a 2-1 lead.   Saugeen Shores #4 came out determined in the third period and evened the score on the first shift.  However just over a minute later Sutton Realty Storm responded and took the lead back.  The Storm would add an insurance goal and skate away with a 4-2 triumph.

Ozzie Alpaugh picked up the win and was again great in goal for the Storm.  Brodie Palinsky and Joseph Hodgkins worked hard all day fighting for loose pucks and played a big role in their team’s victory.

The final game of the round robin had the Storm travel to Shallow Lake for their first road game in over 3 weeks.  The Storm did not seem comfortable in the foreign arena and although they battled back from deficits twice, the Storm eventually fell 3-2 at the hands of the Lakers who played a great game.

Malachi McKinnon played goal for the Storm and made some good saves despite picking up the loss.  Sean Moorehead playing center for the first time all season and was the Storm’s best player, picking up a nice goal in the second period.

The strong showing in the round robin qualified the Sutton Huron Shores Realty Storm for the league’s championship series.  The opponent has not yet been determined.

This coming weekend the Storm has an exhibition game on Sunday March 9th against Kincardine.  Game time is 11:30 at the Plex in Port Elgin.  On Friday March 14th the Storm travel to St. Mary’s to play in their March Break tournament.
