Storm beats Thunder in Bantam Girls Season Opener
The crazy weather of last weekend was a fitting prelude to the meeting of the Storm and Thunder that took place Monday night (Oct 17).  The Storm rolled into Tiverton for their season opener and the Saugeen Shores Bantam B Girls came away with a decisive 6-0 victory, with goaltender Heather Kozak earning the shutout.

The Storm team, sponsored by Allan’s Fireside Grill and Heather’s Poodle Care, looked like a team that had been together for years as their crisp passing and efficient puck movement impressed fans from the start.

Storm forward Zoe Mackintosh opened the scoring midway through the first period on a marvelous feed from defender Sarah Kelly, who finished off an end to end rush with a spin-o-rama move to get the puck to the streaking Mackintosh who rifled a shot over the shoulder of the Thunder goalie.

The Storm took advantage of a Thunder penalty less than two minutes later. Some slick “D to D” passing between Leah Fowler and Emma DeBoer was followed by a feed to centre Alexis Martin who buried a nice wrist shot to put the Storm up 2-0.

Early in the second period, Storm forward Teaghan Johnston scored a pretty goal on a wrist shot from the high slot (assisted by DeBoer).  The 3-0 lead was a cozy one for the Storm fans, but the girls showed no signs of letting up.  Alexis Martin and Zoe Mackintosh both scored their second goals late in the period on a couple of great individual efforts allowing the Storm to go into the third with an even more comfortable 5-0 lead.

The Thunder did not subside in the third period and managed to hold the Storm offense at bay until late in the game when Mackintosh and Kelly connected with Mackintosh rounding out her hat-trick.

Although the Storm controlled the play for most of the third period, some odd man Thunder rushes forced Kozak to make at least a few exceptional saves to preserve the shutout.

The smart play at both ends of the rink, great passing, offensive power and solid goaltending can only bode well for the rest of the season. Although it’s still early, the Storm Bantam Girls currently sit atop the WOAA standings and have the fans eagerly anticipating this weekend when they travel to St. Mary’s for their first tournament of the year.
