Peewee Girls Take Championship
Saugeen Shores Pee Wee Girls Win 2012 WOAA Championships (Builders Division) The Saugeen Shores Pee Wee HL Girls headed down to Ayton with some new found energy and confidence brought on by their strong regular season finish in 2012.  The girls started the year slowly and grew together after each game leading up to Championship weekend on March 24 and 25, 2012.

The girls began the tournament with a strong showing from their foes that play out of Keady, the TCDMHA Rebels.  The game went end to end with no scoring until 4:58 left in the third when Hailey Woods received a pass from Sarah Bester and fired a laser from the point finally solving the Rebel goaltender.  This seemed to inspire the Rebels, and they quickly answered with the tying marker 1 minute and 53 seconds later.  The teams finished the game as they started with end to end rushes, but ultimately a fitting tie at 1-1.

The second game of the tournament for the girls put them up against the less experienced team from Upper Maitland.  Our girls won every game of the season series against Upper Maitland so entered the game with much confidence.  They did not disappoint with a 4-0 win.  Our first goal came from Savanah Brown (assisted by Nikki Walker) with 4 minutes left in the first period.  The second period was scoreless until there was just over 1 minute remaining when the team’s captain, Sarah Bester scored (assisted by Tori Sutter Lammie and Victoria Matheson).  The girls put it out of reach with the final 2 unassisted markers in the third period at 7:40 by Hailey Woods and 2:43 by Amber Hou.  This win cinched first place ranking going into the Championship Game on Sunday.

As the girls readied themselves and headed to the arena on Sunday, they knew it was going to be a tough Championship Game as they were slated to the play the TCDMHA Rebels for the second time in as many days as the Rebels finished the round robin play with a 2nd place ranking.  The game began as the last one ended with numerous end to end rushes.  The game continued with strong defense on both sides to keep the scoreboard with nothing but zeros through the first and second periods.  It took an additional 10 minutes of the third before the deadlock was broken with a breakaway goal by the team’s scoring leader Sarah Bester (assisted by Rachel Kelly and Nikki Walker).  This turned out to be the game and Championship winning goal as the Rebels attempted comeback was squelched with an empty netter by Amber Hou with just 2 seconds remaining for a 2-0 win. The team’s strong defensive group lead by the veteran leadership of Taylor Ferguson, Kelly Robertson,  Mackenzie Hall and Hailey Woods alongside the first year Pee Wee’s of Ainsley Harron and the small but mighty Rachel Kelly.  Goaltending, as always was never in question with the solid pairing of Sarah Underwood and Tiffany Kewageshig.  The team’s forwards are the true picture of coming together when it counts made up of Sarah Bester, Amber Hou, Tori Sutter Lammie, Abby Acton, Fiona Miller, Amber Rowley, Nikki Walker, Savanah Brown, and Victoria Matheson.

The team would like to express a huge thank you to their coaching staff, led by Head Coach Jeff Walker, Assistants Barry Hall and Don Matheson, Trainer Linda Bester and Co-Manager’s Shannon Hall and Deborah Underwood.  A special thank you also goes out to all the parents and siblings that cheered loud and hard all season for the 2012 WOAA Pee Wee Builders Division Champion girls.
