Novice Rep Storm advance to WOAA finals
by Christine Flarity

The Port Elgin Home Hardware/Dunlop Bros. Fuels have moved onto the WOAA Consolation Final after some hard fought, nail biting action last week.

The Storm were up against the Mount Forest Rams, a team who finished two places in front of the Storm during the regular season and were unable to beat all year.  But times have changed.

The team opened up the series against the Rams down in Mount Forest on February 28th.  Our kids got on the board first in the second period when Eoin MacKay scored assisted by Skyler Pomroy and Sam Elyea.  But Mount Forest came back in the third to tie the game up and send it into overtime.  Saugeen Shores finally earned their first victory against the Rams when Ray Hou scored in overtime on a solid pass from Sam Flarity.  Game one to the Storm.

Last weekend, the Storm played 4 games at the Chris Knott Memorial Tournament at home and earned a bronze medal for their efforts.  After all that hockey, they had to return to Mount Forest for game #2 Sunday afternoon.  Once again, the team battled hard but came up short against the home team, losing 2-1.  Scoring for the Storm was Sam Flarity on an unassisted play.  Game two to Mount Forest.

IMG5576.JPGAfter resting up for a couple of days, Saugeen Shores was ready to return to the ice on Tuesday with a home game against the Rams.  The team was in it to win it from the beginning and came away with a convincing 5-3 victory.  Scoring for the Storm were James Fowler with two, with singles coming from David Parsons, Ray Hou and Sam Flarity.  Assisting on the goals were Nic Lalonde, Corey Ribey, Sam Kozelenko, Ray Hou, James Fowler, Eoin MacKay and Francesca Alpajaro.  Game three to the Storm.

The following night the Storm returned to home ice to try and close out the series and move onto the finals.  Mount Forest was not ready to give up and carried a 2-0 lead late into the third period before the home team finally got on the board when Sam Kozelenko dug for the puck around the net and scored, assisted by James Fowler and David Parsons.  The Rams added another goal quickly and seemed in control with a 3-1 lead with less than 3 minutes to play.  But once again, the Novice Rep Storm showed its fans that you never give up until the final buzzer sounds.  Eoin MacKay began the comeback with an unassisted goal followed by the tying goal by Ray Hou assisted by Sam Kozelenko with about a minute left in the third to send the game into overtime.  The Rams seemed to have the game won when their captain headed into our end on a breakaway.  But Jarrett Blue of the Storm made an incredible save to keep his team in the game. The Storm quickly picked up the puck and Eoin MacKay skated into the Rams end and shot it past their goalie for the thrilling come from behind victory.  Game 4 and series win to the Storm.

The team now waits to begin the final series against the Seaforth Stars.  Check the SSMHA website for game times and come out and support this hard working group of kids.
