Port Elgin Home Hardware/Dunlop Bros. Fuels finish regular season
by Christine Flarity

The Saugeen Shores Novice Rep Storm finished off the regular season this past weekend against the top two teams in their division.

First up was the Kincardine Kinucks on Saturday in Southampton. The Storm came out flying knowing that Kincardine was an aggressive, hard checking team. The home team got on the board first when James Fowler scored on an unassisted play.

Kincardine got on the board in the second and third scoring four unanswered goals before Sam Kozelenko scored in the third to bring the game to a close 4-2 score.  The Storm continued to press as Caelen MacDonald and Francesca Alpajaro dug hard in the corners against the charging Kinucks but were unable to pull out the win.  Strong defensive plays by Samuel Elyea and Corey Ribey helped to keep the game close.

The next day, the Novice Rep Storm finished their season against the top ranked Mount Forest Rams.  The Rams have only lost one game all season so our kids knew they were in tough.  But from the opening faceoff, the Storm came to play.  Skyler Pomroy skated hard for the puck and created scoring chances for her teammates.  The home team got on the board first when 4 minutes into the game, Ray Hou fed Nic Lalonde in front of the net and fired it through the surprised Rams goaltender.  The kids battled hard and carried the lead into the second period.

But Mount Forest wasn’t about to give up as they scored 3 goals in the second and seemed destined to take another game away from the Storm.  But with time running down, Sam Flarity fired a shot under the pad of the Rams goalie to bring the score to 3-2.  Assisting on the goal was David Parsons and Samuel Elyea.

The third period was an exciting 15 minutes as both teams traded scoring chances at both ends of the rink.  At one point, the home team had two boys in the penalty box but strong checking along the boards and a relentless effort from James Fowler kept Mount Forest off the scoreboard.  Storm goalie Jarrett Blue made an incredible breakaway save to keep the game close.  Then, with under a minute to play and the Storm goalie on the bench in favour of the extra attacker, Ray Hou passed the puck to Eoin MacKay who charged towards the net and scored to notch the game at 3-3.  After an exciting last ditch effort by the Rams, the Storm celebrated the tie game.

Next up for the Novice Rep Storm are WOAA playdowns scheduled to begin on Feb 18 versus the Kincardine Kinucks.
