Southampton Foodland/Carson Plumbing Novices Start Finals On A Winning Note
The Saugeen Shores Novice LL Team #1 opened their Championship Series on the road in Chesley on Saturday afternoon against the Arran-Elderslie Ice-Dogs. Playing on this big ice surface for the first time this season they came away with a hard fought 7 – 4 victory.

Missing strong center Mercedes Roote and the skilled Ray Hou was a concern but the team dug down a little deeper on their behalf.  Spencer Sutter-Lammie made one of his patented rushes to put Saugeen on the scoreboard first at 5:37 of the opening period. The Ice-Dogs responded a little over a minute later to tie things up.  At 1:52 Braydyn Root took a hooking penalty in front of his net just as an Ice-Dog was about to try to beat Jolina McLean.  It was a "good" penalty, however, on the ensuing powerplay Arran-Elderslie got their goal on a nice one-timer to go up 2 – 1 at 1.26. At this point Jolina advised her bench that she needed to leave the ice.  Weighing his options, her coach advised the referee that they were not calling an official time-out but would in fact play with an extra attacker until the goaltender was able to return.  Off the face-off Kaya Hall gained control and fed Spencer who went in all alone to tie the score at two. An unlucky turnover caused by a “sticky” puck gave an Ice-Dog a free shot at the still vacated net but with the period running down Anthony Sarauz banged in a rebound off a Spencer shot to knot the game at 3.  With 21 seconds left Jolina reappeared and ready to play the next two periods. At the 6:14 mark of the second Hunter Barnard made a dazzling solo rush and deposited the puck behind the goalie to take a 4 – 3 lead. Shortly after Hunter’s effort Kaya Hall picked up the puck at the Arran blue-line and beat the defenceman to the outside and let a hard shot go that beat the goalie trying to come across his crease. But with under a minute to go in the second period the Ice-Dogs scored to bring them back to within one at 5 – 4. With both teams enjoying chances in the third it was Spencer who would score two unanswered goals to give Saugeen Shores a 7 – 4 win. With 1.55 remaining Saugeen Shores called their official time-out to remind every player their responsibility. Breakaway chances by Ethan Walsh and Aiden DeVries and great defence, backchecking and goaltending made for a very exciting third period.  The most exciting may have been the penalty shot penalty called on Spencer for closing his hand on the puck in the crease. Eventhough there was only 7.8 seconds remaining, this was a test for Jolina and she passed with flying colours. She followed the shooter perfectly and closed off the blocker side as he tried to tuck the puck into the corner.  The Digger Award was presented to the defence crew Blake Shields, Hunter Barnard, Keyanna Kimewon, and Amber Gallie. Second game of the series goes on Monday 21st March at 6pm in Southampton.
