The Martins Bicycle Shop Midget Storm participated in the
Archie McMillan Memorial Tournament in Kincardine Saturday and Sunday.
The Storm lost to the host team 4-2 in an early morning,
sluggish effort. Goal scorers were Martin Pilar, assisted by Brett Esplen and
Kevin Bowman and Nick Goreski, assisted by Jayce Dunlop and Cory MacDonald.
After some much needed rest, they went on to play Saturday
afternoon which ended with the Storm’s 6-1 win over South Huron. Nick Goreski
earned a hat trick with Aaron George netting 2 and Jayce Dunlop adding a
single. Assisting in the effort was MacDonald with 3, Brady Goreski with 2, Tom
Godwin, Brett Coulson and Dave Mercer.
An 8-1 victory over Mt Forest Sunday morning earned the
Storm a berth to the B division final against St. Mary’s. Godwin netted 4, Ian
MacKay added a pair with Dunlop, MacDonald and Brett Couslon adding singles.
Assist went to Mercer with 3, Nick Goreski with 2, George and Pilar with one a piece.
The Championship game had all three periods played back and
forth for these two perfectly matched teams. The Storm got on the board first
when Ian Mackay picked up the puck and rushed through all of St Mary’s players
and buried it, unassisted.
Soon after, St Mary’s tied it up and added another for the
go ahead.
The boys battled back and Nick Goreski found the back of the
net with help from MacDonald and Dunlop to even things up.
The trophy was secured when Dave Mercer picked up a pass
from Dunlop and fired a rocket over the shoulder of the St. Mary’s tender as he
crossed the blue line with only 30 seconds left on the clock.
