“CAW Bantams Take 2 game lead in OMHA Playoff Series Against Collingwood”
For Release February 1, 2009 Saugeen Shores, Ontario

The Saugeen Shores CAW  Bantam Rep travelled to Collingwood on January 31st for game 1 of best of 5 OMHA Playoff Series and came home with a 2-0 shutout.

After a 3 week layoff while they waited for the Collingwood versus Midland series to finish, the Storm had to shake off a little rust in the first period. Goaltender Brett McCulloch held them in the game and at the end of the 1st the score remained deadlocked at goose-eggs.

Both teams seemed to settle into their games in the 2nd which featured end-to-end rushes, and an aggressive tempo. The teams are very evenly matched resulting in a very entertaining game and the goalies were determined not to let any goals past them. At the end of the 2nd frame, the game remained knotted at 0.

The Storm finally struck for the first goal as Ian MacKay blasted a slapshot into the top left corner on a pass from Jacob Roote at the 9:23 mark of the 3rd. Jacob Roote on a set up from Zach Walker and Brady Caley, added what would turn out to be an insurance marker at the 5:34 mark. Despite relentless attacks by Collingwood, a solid team effort combined with stellar goaltending by McCulloch provided a shutout win for the Storm.

Collingwood made the return trip to Saugeen Shores for game 2 on February 1st. Similar to game 1, both teams came out flying, trying to grab the early lead. The pace was fast and featured an aggressive style of play by each team for the full ten minutes of the period. At the end of the frame, the game remained scoreless.

The 2nd period was a mirror of the first with both teams pushing for the first marker of the contest. The tempo picked up a notch with end to end rushes and bone-crunching checks. After numerous scoring chances by both squads, and with only 1:24 left on the clock, Ian MacKay blasted a text book slapshot from the point (low and just inside the post) on a pass from Russ MacMillan and Jacob Roote to give the Storm the lead. The Storm headed to the intermission with the lead.

Zach Walker scored the 2nd Storm goal (and what would turn out to be the winner) just 1 minute and 8 seconds into the 3rd on a setup from Russ MacMillan and Michael Deboer. Collingwood however was determined and continued to push, and Mark Griggs finally found a way to put one past Brett McCulloch at the 8:16 mark. The Storm were equally determined and continued to skate and stick to their game plan. With only 3 minutes left to play, Tom Godwin added the 3rd Storm tally on a pass from MacKay to seal the victory, and a 2 games to 0 lead in the series.

The Storm hit the road to Collingwood for game #3 on February 2nd and then will host Collingwood (if necessary) for game #4 on Friday, February 6th at 9:00 pm at the Coliseum in Southampton.
