OWHA U13 HL1 Bring home GOLD for the House League Championship!
U13 Storm Girls win House League Championship!

This past weekend the Saugeen Shores U13 Local League girls team sponsored by Roote’s Gas Bar travelled to Ripley and Lucknow for their year end tournament.

In the first of 3 games in Ripley on Saturday, the Storm Girls started off strong, defeating the Kincardine Kinucks by a 7-0 score.  Leading the way was Jayden Edwards with her first of two hat tricks in the tournament.  Ana Pepin chipped in with a pair of goals to go along with singles from Adriana Doonan and Lilah Holt.  Solid defense by Lily Thede, Aubrey Scongack, Lauren Amyot and Doonan kept the Kincardine chances to a minimum and goaltender Ivy Dennison did the rest in registering the shutout.

The Wingham 86’ers were next up, and they too met a similar fate.  The Storm girls played another excellent all-around game and this one too was never in doubt.  Final score: 6-0 Storm.  Scoring for Saugeen Shores were Georgie O’Brien, Hannah Roote and Pepin with singles while Edwards netted the hat trick.

The final round robin game on Saturday had the Storm go up against the Walkerton Capitals in a battle to determine first overall in the round robin pool.  Walkerton got off to a strong start jumping out to an early 1-0 lead.  After Nola Koenne tied things up, the Capitals again took the lead 2-1 early in the second period.  It wasn’t looking promising as the Storm took a penalty right afterwards to put them down a skater, but this ended up being the turning point in the game.  They kept Walkerton pinned in their own end for the entire two minutes, and after killing off the penalty knotted things up at 2-2 on a goal from Edwards.   From there it was all Saugeen Shores, as the Storm battered the Capitals with 3 more unanswered goals to win it 5-2.   O’Brien, Edwards with her 2nd of the game and Sophia Seaman rounded out the scoring.

Onto the final in Lucknow on Sunday, and a rematch with Walkerton who had finished second in the round robin.  Walkerton again came out firing and took an early 1-0 lead.  But Seaman tied things up with a beautiful shot over the glove of the Capitals’ goalie and the tide turned in favour of the Storm.  Nice passing led to two goals from Alexa Kruse, followed by O’Brien’s 3rd of the tourney making it a 4-1 game for the girls. Walkerton replied to pull to within 4-2, but Holt put the game away with the Storms’ 5th goal of the game.  The final score was again 5-2, giving the girls the Championship!

The playoff tournament win capped off a strong season in which the Storm rattled off a 20-11-1 record.

Special thanks go out to the coaching staff for doing such a great job with the girls this season!  Go Storm Go!
