Storm Undefeated In Round-robin
Submitted By Meaghan Mercer on Sunday, December 20, 2009

The Martins Bike Shop Saugeen Shores Storm Midgets travelled during Friday’s nasty weather to play in the Pickering Midget “A” Hockey Tournament.

Game one against Whitby was all Storm as they won 5-1. Nick Goreski scored less than minutes into the first on a pass from Jayce Dunlop. Two minutes later he earned another with help from Matt Ingrey.  Ingrey won the face off back to Martin Pilar and drove the net to pick up a single 9 seconds later.

Halfway through the second Kevin Bowman picked up his first point of the tourney on a pass from Pilar and Goreski. Shortly after, Tom Godwin set up Ian MacKay for his first of the weekend but the end of the scoring for that game. Brett McCulloch was in net for the Storm.

Game two against a strong West Hill team was a tighter affair with back and forth plays all game. Brett Coulson finally broke the goose egg half way through the second on a pair of passes from Ingrey and Dunlop. There was no more scoring for the Storm until late in the third when Hayden Burke earned a point when a pass from Skylar Hess and Ingrey hit Burke and was deflected by a West Hill player into the net. Goreski secured the victory with just over a minute on the clock on a perfect pass from Aaron George. Jordan Kelley stopped a lot of rubber for the Storm.

The last game of the round robin had the Storm playing the host center in a no contest match.

Storm wasted no time getting on the board when Dunlop fired one from the point on a pass from Dave Mercer. The defence scoring continued with Dave Whitehead, Dunlop (unassisted) and Jake Colley all scoring from the point with assists going to Hess, Ingrey, George and Coulson.

George, Godwin and Pilar all added singles with help from MacKay, Hess, Ingrey, Goreski and Dunlop.

The Storm was the only team to go undefeated in the round robin which put them in first place and resulted in a rematch against the fourth place West Hill.

The semi final match was another heart stopper that had the Storm out front until late in the third when West Hill managed a 2 goal lead that the Storm were unable to battle back from.

Goal scorers were Ingrey and Godwin with assists earned by MacKay and Mercer.
