Midget Girls - Two-Point Game for Michel
Submitted By Stephanie McArthur on Tuesday, February 02, 2010
The Saugeen Shores Queen’s Bar & Grill/Giant Tiger Midget Girls Team took down Wingham on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at the Plex in Port Elgin by a score of 3-1.  Saugeen Shores goalie, Mackenzie Bertrand, shut out the Wingham team until the dying minutes of the third.

The Wingham team was the first to get on the score sheet, taking a tripping penalty just 31 seconds into the first period.  The Queen’s Bar & Grill/Giant Tiger girls poured it on, but did not get their first goal until half way into the period, when Sarah Thornburn lifted in Katie Little’s rebound.  The other assist on the goal went to affiliated player Bryanna Cobean.

Saugeen Shores took a 2-0 lead just over 6 minutes into the second period when Natasha Kippers took the puck from in a Wingham player’s skates between the hash marks in the Wingham end.  Kippers skated around the Wingham defence and put the puck in on the ice on the stick side.  Assists on the second goal were recorded by Gillian Michel and RaeAnn McArthur.  Saugeen Shores’ third and final goal came late in the second, when Michel passed the puck to affiliated player Mackenzie Brown.  Brown released a high shot form the top of the circle, which slipped past the Wingham goalie’s blocker for the insurance goal.

Wingham’s only goal came with one minute 46 seconds remaining in the game.  The Saugeen Shores defence fell and the Wingham player was alone in the Storm end.  Bertrand made the initial save, but the Wingham player was able to pick up her rebound, skate behind the net, and tuck in the wrap-around goal despite Bertrand’s supreme effort to slide across the crease and close the gap.
