09-10 Atom Girls - Atom Girls Storm to Victory
Submitted By Steve Miller on Sunday, January 31, 2010
The Saugeen Shores Dunlop Fuels/ Rintoul’s Pools and Spa Atom Girls team captured their second win of the season December 7th against Markdale at the Coliseum in Southampton.

The Atom girls had a great offensive start to the first period with good chances on net by line mates Savannah Brown, Alyssa Trumbley and Alex Dimberg.   Throughout the first, the defensive pairing of Taylor Ferguson and Ainsley Harron did a good job keeping the Markdale forwards at bay while feeding the puck up the ice to the Storm offense.

The Storm’s hard work finally paid off when at 4:49 Brown netted her first goal of the game by picking up her own rebound and slipping the puck past the Markdale goaltender.

The Storm kept up the pressure in the dying minutes of the first period with shots on net by Marley Scott and Nikki Walker.  Net minder Tori Janes made some key stops to keep Markdale off the scoreboard going into the second period.

Two minutes into the second, Jamie Miller had a breakaway chance picking up a loose puck and streaking  up the right hand side of the ice to take a shot on net.    A minute later, a good back checking effort by forward Victoria Sutter prevented Markdale from getting a breakaway.

With less than five minutes left in the second Markdale potted two quick goals to put them ahead by one.    The Storm rallied back.  With 2:04 remaining in the second, Sarah Bester capitalized on a scramble in front of the net, shooting a loose puck far side past the goalie to even the score going in to the third.

A minute into the third, the Storm was forced to kill a two minute penalty.   Good hustle by the penalty killing line of Jamie Miller, Fiona Miller, Sarah Bester and Janelle Fowler kept Markdale stuck at two.

The Storm continued to create scoring opportunities with shots on net by Brown, Dimberg and Tiffany Kewageshig.    Brown racked up her second goal of the game when she picked up a pass from Trumbley and converted on a shot from the slot to give the Storm the one goal lead.

In the dying seconds of the game the line of Jolina McLean, Marley Scott and Jamie Miller stormed up the ice with a last ditch effort to pad the lead, but the shot went wide.   Final score Saugeen Shores Storm 3, Markdale 2.
